A dark border is built from the deepest tones in the garden – plum, claret, damson, near-black – layered with rich purple and bronze foliage that makes the whole thing smoulder. On its own it could feel heavy, so the trick is contrast: a few jewel-bright sparks of magenta, orange or acid-green lift the darkness and make it glitter rather than sit flat.
Foliage does much of the work. Dark-leaved shrubs and grasses give the scheme its moody base all season, so it looks dramatic even between flushes of flower. It is a sophisticated, contemporary look that photographs beautifully.
