Fragrance is easy to waste and easy to make the most of. Concentrate scented plants where you actually spend time – beside the front door, around a seat, along a path you brush past – so the perfume reaches you. Enclosed, sheltered spots hold scent far better than open, windy ones.
Then plan for succession: winter shrubs like daphne and sweet box, spring wallflowers, a high-summer peak of roses, jasmine and philadelphus, and phlox carrying the fragrance into autumn. That way there is something in the air for most of the year.

Which plants give scent in winter?
Sweet box (Sarcococca) and daphne are the stars of winter fragrance, with tiny flowers that scent a surprising distance on a still day. Planting them near a door or path means you catch the perfume even in the cold months.
