Most plants flower for two or three weeks and then stop. The trick to a long season is two-fold: build the backbone from genuine long-flowerers that bloom for months, then layer in a succession of others so that as one group fades, another comes into its own.
Deadheading helps enormously – many perennials will flower again if you remove the spent blooms – and a mix of early, mid and late plants means there is never a gap. The result is a border that earns its keep from June to the frosts.
