How to make a planting plan
Drawing one by hand means measuring the bed, drawing it to scale, then choosing every plant and marking where it goes, spaced so the bed fills without crowding. Here the garden planting plan comes from a design you have already seen: photograph your garden, mark your beds and add their measurements, pick a style, and the plants in the picture become the plan. A long border of perennials works the same way and becomes a herbaceous border planting plan.
Planting design you can see first
Garden planting design is the art of putting plants together: height graded from back to front, colour that runs through the seasons, and leaves and shapes that work side by side.
